Chinese Aviation Watches: Why the 1963 Chronograph Became a Modern Classic
Chinese aviation watches have a distinctive place in mechanical watch history. Unlike many vintage pilot watches that trace their origins to established European manufacturers, China's early aviation chronographs were developed to meet the country's own military requirements. The story behind the Seagull Watch's 1963 chronograph is closely connected to Project 304, a program that led to China's first domestically engineered aviation chronograph.
Today, that history lives on through modern reissues that combine the visual character of a vintage pilot watch with contemporary materials and mechanical finishing.

An Aviation Milestone: From the Cockpit to the Wrist
The original aviation chronograph was developed in 1963 after a confidential national project assigned the Tianjin Watch Factory with the task of producing a chronograph for the Chinese Air Force. The resulting timepiece was designed for timing flight phases and other critical aviation operations, marking an important stage in the development of independent Chinese watchmaking.
The modern revival is described as beginning with a 2008 debut that brought the 1963 legacy into a contemporary wristwatch. The design was restored from original military blueprints, retaining the vintage dial character and aviation-focused identity while adapting the watch for modern wear.

The Panda-Eye Dial: The Look of a Classic Chronograph
One of the most recognizable features of a vintage aviation chronograph is its high-contrast dial. The panda-eye layout uses a light silver-white or cream-colored main dial with contrasting black sub-dials, creating the visual effect that gives the style its familiar name. This configuration has become closely associated with classic chronographs and remains popular among modern watch enthusiasts.
This particular panda dial adds several details beyond the basic black-and-white contrast. The black sub-dials feature concentric circle textures, while golden applied numerals and hands add warmth to the dial. Blue chronograph hands provide another layer of color, and the central seconds hand uses a red tip. The red star and ā22 ZUANā text complete the period-inspired appearance.

A Compact Chronograph: The Appeal of 37mm
At approximately 37.3mm in diameter, this vintage chronograph has relatively compact proportions compared with many modern chronographs. Its round 316L stainless steel case measures approximately 15mm thick, with a lug-to-lug length of about 47mm and a net weight of 61g.
The smaller diameter helps preserve the proportions associated with vintage aviation watches, while the relatively substantial thickness reflects the mechanical chronograph construction inside. For anyone looking for a 37mm chronograph, these dimensions create a noticeably different wrist presence from larger contemporary sports chronographs.

Vintage Design, Modern Materials
The case uses 316L stainless steel and is paired with a synthetic sapphire crystal. The watch has a stated water resistance of 5 Bar, making it splash-resistant rather than suitable for swimming, showering, or diving.
Ā Leather and NATO straps give the watch a choice of vintage and military-inspired styling. The approximately 18mm strap width works with the 37.3mm case, while the pin buckle keeps the setup straightforward.

The ST1901 Movement: The Heart of the Chronograph
Inside is the high-finished ST1901 manual-winding chronograph movement. It contains 22 jewels and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour.
The movement is rooted in the Venus 175 architecture and preserves the traditional column-wheel mechanism, giving the chronograph its characteristic mechanical operation. Its finishing includes CÓtes de Genève stripes, hand-polished bridges and components, hand-brushed details and rhodium plating, combining mid-century mechanical architecture with more refined contemporary finishing.
After a full wind, the ST19 movement typically provides around 42-45 hours of power reserve, or approximately 35ā37 hours while the chronograph is running.
